Case study : Crew web browsing via scratch cards available on each crew member's cabin
Dorian Hellas have installed a Navarino tailor made solution for one of their vessel’s onboard network. Dorian needed a solution that combined official use and crew welfare through the vessels’ satellite systems.
In September 2009 they decided to install an FBB terminal on LPG Captain Nicholas ML and together with the Navarino technical team they designed and integrated a customized network. The installation took place in Karsto / Norway. Their main concern was to install GTMail for the ship’s official communication and to provide internet access in all crew cabins via scratch cards. The first step was to replace the vessel's current network connection through Fleet 77 with a FleetBroadband 250 connected to a Navarino router in order to allow web access and GTMail and prevent any unwanted traffic (Fleet 77 and mini-M remained as back up systems). Then they created a new separate network and routed all crew cabins to it. That network will also be used for safety reasons. Thus every cabin had its own network socket and each crew member can connect his own laptop to it. They also installed a Wi-Fi access point on the Master’s deck. The crew internet network was connected directly to the FBB which was configured to redirect all traffic to Stratos chat cards platform in order for the crew to use “All in One” prepaid crew calling cards. So each time a crew member would like to go online the Stratos main page will pop up and ask for their username and password which all Stratos prepaid crew calling cards provide. An important part of this is that on the Stratos main page are links to BBC, MSN, CNN and other popular sites “light versions”, which means that pages are compressed by up to 90% so that less units are deducted and web browsing time is extended.
