Inmarsat
Fleet range of services provides enhanced flexibility to meet
the varied communications' requirements of the maritime industry
for voice, fax and data services.
As an option for data communication, charges can be based
on the packets of data transmitted (MPDS) rather than the
duration of message transfers.
Fleet 77 complies with the specifications of the International
Maritime Organizations (IMO) for GMDSS and offers global coverage
for all services, while Fleet 55 and Fleet 33 operate within
the Inmarsat spot beams for all services except low-speed
voice which is global. The two latest members of the Fleet
family, Fleet 55 and Fleet 33 have the benefits of reduced-size
antennas and lower cost.

MPDS or ISDN
Fleet 77
and Fleet 55 offer Mobile ISDN for voice, fax, large file
transfers and facilities such as videoconferencing. In general,
if speed and high throughput are required, then the Mobile
ISDN option is recommended to be used. Alternatively, the
Mobile Packet Data option serves the need for regular e-mail,
web browsing, smaller file transfers and other standard networking
activity.
