Shore-to-Ship communication

To contact an Inmarsat terminal by phone, fax or telex, you need to dial:

the international dialing code + Inmarsat satellite code + Inmarsat mobile number

International dialing code
Use the usual international dialing code for the country you're in, e.g. 00 from the UK. Listings for the international phone/fax and telex dialing codes are available here.

Inmarsat satellite code
You need to dial the Inmarsat satellite code for the region in which the terminal you are contacting is located. Inmarsat has its own satellite code - 870 - which automatically routes the caller through to the Inmarsat terminal regardless of which Inmarsat Ocean Region the terminal is in. This can be only used for dialing Inmarsat numbers beginning with 3, 5, 6, 60 or 76.
There are also satellite code numbers for each of the four Inmarsat Ocean Regions.
These are as follows:

Region Satellite code for phone/fax Satellite code for telex
Atlantic Ocean Region East (AOR-E) 871 or 870 581
Pacific Ocean Region (POR) 872 or 870 582
Indian Ocean Region (IOR) 873 or 870 583
Atlantic Ocean Region West (AOR-W) 874 or 870 584

Inmarsat mobile number
Inmarsat mobile numbers start with 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 60, 76.
These digits identify to the LESO what type of Inmarsat service the caller is trying to use (eg Inmarsat A, Inmarsat C etc).

To contact Inmarsat mobile numbers starting with Satellite code for phone/fax
3, 5, 6, 60, 76 00 + 870 or 871 or 872 or 873 or 874 + mobile number
1 (by phone) 00 + 871 or 872 or 873 or 874 + mobile number
1 (by fax/data) 00 + 871 or 872 or 873 or 874 + 81 + mobile number
4 (telex only) 00 + 581 or 582 or 583 or 584 + mobile number

To send a telex to an Inmarsat A terminal (digit 1), dial 0 + the ocean region code + mobile number + "+".

To send an e-mail to an Inmarsat terminal
To send an e-mail to an Inmarsat terminal, you only need to know the e-mail address.
The exception is Inmarsat C. To e-mail an Inmarsat C terminal, you will need to register with the relevant Inmarsat service provider. Please contact Inmarsat Customer Care for a printed guide on how to send e-mails to or from Inmarsat C, which includes a full list of service providers you can register with.
